Working in partnership with organizations across several European countries, the Budapest Centre is participating in the EU Commission funded project: Words are Stones. This project aims to combat online hate speech based upon racism and discrimination.
The growth of the internet as a primary means of communication and social interaction, especially amongst young people, along with the anonymity that it provides, has fostered the proliferation of online hate-based activities. This project will have two primary aims: (1) to engage with young social media strategists/managers, bloggers, online activists and ‘Youtubers’, in order to equip them with the competences and tools necessary to protect human rights in online space; (2) to motivate discussion and activities against online hate speech in young people by the creation of national networks of 100 human rights activists equipped to combat racism and discrimination.
We are reaching out to you in order to invite the participation of interested candidates in focus group meetings which will be the opening stage of the initiative. Five focus groups will be organized in English with around 10 participants in each. The aim is to develop a rounded and focused perspective on the issues faced, and to gather information about the grassroots perception of hate speech and its digital diffusion. The outcome of the meetings will be taken into account when organizing the trainings for the interested persons in the second half of 2018. The members of the focus groups are potential candidates for becoming participants of the trainings.
The focus groups will be carried out during March 2018, with specific dates yet to be confirmed.
