On Monday 16th of November (2 pm – 3,30 pm), the Budapest Centre will convene in Washington DC the session “Ten Years of RtoP: The Way Ahead. Implementation of a normative principle” in the framework of the Law, Justice, and Development Week (LJD Week) hosted by the World Bank from the 16th to the 20th of November.
The year 2015 represents the tenth anniversary of the World Summit in which Member States embraced the Responsibility to Protect concept highlighted in paragraph 138-139 of the Summit Outcome Document. As Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said, this anniversary marks “the opportune moment” to analyze consensus reached to date around RtoP and discuss future implementation.
The Budapest Centre for the International Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities has been co-chairing the Community of Practice on Genocide Prevention and Development, which was founded in early 2013 in the context of the World Bank-IMF Global Forum on Law, Justice, and Development.
This Global Forum is a permanent knowledge forum aimed at connecting stakeholders and experts from all over the world to provide a mechanism for continual and efficient knowledge exchange for the cogeneration of innovative legal solutions and, therefore, for the development of new policies based on efficiency, equity, and justice.
LJD Week 2015 will focus on the role of Governance and the Law in the social and economic advancement of nations, stressing on the value of law in producing sustainable development outcomes. In addition, it will explore topics related to the Middle East and North of Africa Region and to the World Bank Group.
The session will be introduced by a key–note speech of Adama Dieng, Un Special Advisor to the Secretary General on the Prevention of Genocide.
Tod Lindberg, Research Fellow of the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, and Lee Feinstein, Dean of the School of Global and International Studies at Indiana University, will lead the session on RtoP aimed at shading light on its future implementation and on the possibilities and prospects of a transatlantic cooperation on RtoP.
Enzo Maria Le Fevre Cervini, Director of Research and Cooperation of The Budapest Centre for the International Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities, will be the moderator of the panel.
